St. John’s Medical College, Bengaluru established in 1963 by the CBCI with the aim of training healthcare personnel committed to serving the poor in the margins, was dedicated as a memorial of the XXXVIII International Eucharistic Congress held in Bombay in 1964 and named after St. John the Baptist, the Patron of Pope John XXIII, who was an ardent supporter of this initiative of the Catholic Church in India. St. John’s Medical College and Hospital and School of Nursing were started in 1963, 1975 and 1980 respectively at Bangalore by the C.B.C.I. Society for Medical Education. The School of Nursing was upgraded to the College of Nursing in 1989. In 1994 all the Institutions were brought under the common name : St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences. St. John’s Research Institute was the latest addition to the Academy in the year 2004.
Spread over 132 acres of verdant campus in the salubrious climate of the Garden City of Bengaluru, this institution stands testimony to the purpose for which it was established. St John’s Medical College Bangalore is affiliated with the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Karnataka. The college is ranked 19 by NIRF 2023 among the top Medical colleges in India. For the last ten years, St. John’s Medical College has consistently been ranked among the top 10 medical colleges in the country. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council, a Review Committee of the University Grants Commission, has recognized the excellence of St. John’s Medical College and Hospital and accorded it with a 5 star grading.
From its inception SJMC has been a truly National Medical College drawing faculty and students from all across the country. The college is recognized by the National Medical Council and affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore. The annual intake is 150 students. All admissions to MBBS course are fulfilled through the Karnataka Examination Authority. The institution is an apex body of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) which is the largest non-governmental contributor to health care in India (with > 3500 member institutions throughout India).
