Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh: Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) is a public postgraduate medical research university located in Chandigarh, India. It is an ‘Institute of National Importance’ and is recognized as a Center of Excellence by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. PGIMER Chandigarh has been ranked the 2nd best medical institute in the NIRF Rankings 2023, by the Ministry of Education. It offers educational, medical research, and training facilities in all specialties, super specialties, and sub-specialties.
PGIMER Chandigarh offers more than 50 postgraduate medical and paramedical programs, including MD, MS, DM, M.Ch, and MPH. The institute also offers Ph.D. and Post-Doctoral degrees in medical sciences. The admission to the courses is made on merit on an all-India basis by holding an entrance examination by the institute, after issuing a countrywide admission notice. Each year, more than 20,000 medical graduates across the country compete for the positions. Approximately 1% to 2% of the candidates are selected, making it one of the most competitive tests across all fields in India. PGIMER also trains nurses and paramedical students for under and post-graduation every year.
The medical course offered by PGIMER Chandigarh is the MD/MS program, which has a duration of 3 years. The eligibility criteria for the MD/MS program is to have completed MBBS or an equivalent degree from a University/ Institute recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI) with a minimum experience of three years in a hospital in the relevant field or five years in general practice. The selection basis for the MD/MS program is the entrance examination conducted by the institute. The fees for the MD/MS program at PGIMER Chandigarh are INR 6,000 per year.
