NIMHANS is world-renowned as a centre for mental health, neurosciences and allied fields. NIMHANS has a rich history and its origins date back to the nineteenth century; it later was the site for the Mysore Government Mental Hospital in 1934. It became the first post-graduate centre in the country for psychiatry and related disciplines through the establishment of the All India Institute of Mental Health (AIIMH) in 1954. The amalgamation of mental health and neurosciences led to the formation of NIMHANS in 1974, followed by recognition as a deemed university in 1994, and elevation to an Institute of National Importance through an Act of Parliament in 2013. 

The vision of NIMHANS is to be a world leader in these areas and to evolve state of the art approaches to patient care through translational research. The contributions of NIMHANS in providing the highest quality of clinical services, standards of excellence in training and active engagement in research in these specialised fields are widely known. NIMHANS has been committed to training in basic sciences related to the brain and mind, behaviour in health and ill-health, translation of evidence from the bench to the bedside, as well as in the community.  The concurrent emphasis on both biomedicine as well as psychosocial aspects has driven research ranging from neuroplasticity, imaging and genomics to the psychological, spiritual and anthropological aspects of mental well-being and illness. NIMHANS has won many accolades including the commendation award for Kaya Kalp for three consecutive years (2017-2020), ranked 4th out of 5400 hospitals in the country on patient satisfaction on Mera Aspataal, has been ranked among the top 200 hospitals in the world by Newsweek magazine for two consecutive years, ranked 4th among educational institutions in NIRF rankings. The institute also figures among India’s top 10 government universities league and is the only hospital among them. NIMHANS is also the first INI hospital to be accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Health Care Providers (NABH).

NIMHANS Bangalore offers a wide range of medical courses at diploma, UG, PG and doctoral levels. It offers a diploma in Psychological Medicine. At the UG level, NIMHANS provide B.Sc courses. The PG courses at NIMHANS Bangalore include M.Sc, MD, M.Phil and MPH. NIMHANS doctoral courses include DM, Ph.D, M.Ch and fellowship programmes. Also, NIMHANS Bangalore offers certificate courses in Neural Science for Engineers, Management of Addictive Disorders and Advanced Training of Hepatologists in Alcohol use Disorder Management.

FAQs on Course and Fees

1. Does NIMHANS offer scholarships?

Students must fulfill the requirements set forth by the relevant scholarship sponsor in order to be eligible to receive NIMHANS Bangalore scholarships. Maulana Azad National Fellowship (MANF) for Minority Students, Junior Research Fellowship in Sciences, Humanities, and Social Sciences, among other NIMHANS Bangalore scholarships available to students pursuing M.Phil programmes. The institute regularly presents departing students with a variety of accolades and prizes. These prizes are given out based on deserving performance. Dr MV Govindaswamy Memorial Award, Dr RN Moorthy Award, and others are among the awards offered to the students at NIMHANS Bangalore.

2. What is the recognition of the Institute and its courses?

NIMHANS was declared as an Institute of National Importance vide Government of India Gazette Notification dated 14.9.2012. As per the Act, NIMHANS does not come under the purview of any of the statutory Councils, namely, the Medical Council of India, Indian Nursing Council or Rehabilitation Council of India. 

3. What are the training fees for the short-term training/visit/observership?

Training fees charged for Indian Nationals are as follows:

  • Consultants/Faculties/Individual – Rs. 10,000 per month
  • PG Medical – Rs. 5,000 per month
  • PG Non-Medical – Rs. 3,000 per month
  • M.Sc Nursing – Rs. 2,000 per month
  • Interns of Physiotherapy – Rs. 2,000 per month
  • Interns in Speech Pathology and Audiology – Rs. 2,000 per month
  • Medical/Non-Medical in CARF – Rs. 2,000 per month
  • CT/MRI Trainees in the Dept. of NIIR – Rs. 2,000 per month
  • Visitors – Rs. 100 per day 

 

National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences, NIMHANS: Admission Process and Important Dates

 

  • Application should be submitted through the Online mode (only) along with all the attachments, signature and photograph through the link available in website.
  • A candidate can apply for a maximum of 3 (three) courses only (provided they are eligible). Applicants are not permitted to submit multiple online applications.
  • Eligible candidates for Entrance Test will be informed to download the e-hall ticket, which should be produced at the time of Entrance Test.
  • No individual intimation will be sent to candidates who are not selected and no correspondence on this subject will be entertained.
  • The question paper for Entrance test will contain multiple-choice objective-type questions. The duration of the test for each course will be 90 minutes and the number of questions to be answered is 100.
  • There will be negative marking and 0.25 marks will be deducted for all wrong answers. No marks will be deducted for unanswered questions.
  • Common Entrance Test will be conducted for all four B.Sc. courses for 100 marks and the seat allotment is based on merit list.
  • Selection will be purely based on merit in the Entrance Test
  • List of all the qualified candidates and those called for admission will be notified on the Institute’s website and notice board.
  • The candidates who have been selected under various categories should submit the Original Certificates/Documents on the day of admission as shown under “Enclosures” along with requisite fee as shown under “Fee Structure” of the Prospectus.

1. What is the age limit for UG courses at NIMHANS?

The minimum and maximum age limit for UG courses at NIMHANS is 17 and 25 years respectively, with a relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST/PwBD candidates and 3 years for OBC candidates.

NIMHANS provides PG placements in DM, M.Ch, MD, M.Sc, and MD. NIMHANS Placements 2023, has demonstrated noteworthy achievements in PG courses for 2019 and 2020. In 2020, out of 98 seats, 33 students secured placements, with a median salary of INR 15,60,000. In 2019 with 78 seats available, 25 students were successfully placed, attaining a median salary of INR 6,00,000.
