The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) (originally known as Institut Jawaharlal de formation et de recherche médicales postdoctorales) is a medical school located in Pondicherry, India. JIPMER is an Institute of National Importance (INI) and a tertiary care referral hospital. It is under the direct administrative control of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and Indian Government, with autonomy to run its internal administration. JIPMER currently has over 300 faculty members, over 700 resident physicians and over 800 nursing, administrative, and support staff. It admits 249 undergraduate students and 200 postgraduate students annually.
The campus contains the medical college, the old and new hospital blocks, student and resident hostels, staff quarters, a Kendriya Vidyalaya, a branch each of two nationalized banks, two ATM’s, a post office, a temple, the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam JIPMER Auditorium playgrounds and sporting fields.
JIPMER offers a variety of courses. Undergraduate courses include MBBS, B.Sc. (Medical Laboratory Technology), B.Sc. (Allied Medical Sciences – Cardiac Lab Technology / Dialysis / Neuro / OT), BMRSc (Bachelor of Medical Record Science). B.Sc. (Nursing) was started in 2006. Postgraduate courses include MDS,MD, MS, and diploma in many specialties, M.Sc. in nursing, Medical Biochemistry and Medical Physiology and PhD in several subjects. Super-specialty courses include MCh in Surgical Oncology, Cardiothoracic & vascular surgery, Urology, Neurosurgery, Plastic surgery, Paediatric surgery, Surgical gastroenterology and DM in Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Neonatology, Clinical pharmacology, Clinical immunology and Endocrinology. In January 2014 JIPMER started master’s in public health(MPH) course, Emergency Medical Technician course MRO and MRT.

1. What is the admission process to PhD programs?
Admission processes to the Ph.D. Programs will be made annually during July sessions. Call for applications will be announced in the month of May every year and all major newspapers in India will carry the announcement. Online registration of applications will be made on JIPMER website Entrance examination will be held during the 3rd Sunday of every June. Commencement of course on 1st July. Close of the admission is 31st July. Admission will be made as per Merit Rank.The minimum and maximum age limit for UG courses at NIMHANS is 17 and 25 years respectively, with a relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST/PwBD candidates and 3 years for OBC candidates.
