The Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER) was inaugurated by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India, on 16th January, 1957. Since then the institute is best known as a Medical Learning Centre of Excellence and a Specialty Hospital, with the following objectives. Today, the institution is best known for study of undergraduate, post graduate and post doctoral level medical courses, specialist medical degrees and diplomas, para medical courses, nursing courses in UG, PG and Under school level and is known as the Bethlehem of advanced medical research. 

For long, IPGME&R remained solely a superspeciality referral hospital and post graduate medical institution. New landmark sections were added over the years, such as Respiratory Care Unit, The Bangur Institute of Neuroscience, The institute of Psychiatry, Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences. A nursing school in school level and a Nursing College for UG and PG level nursing courses were set up. UG Course on Physiotherapy and Para Medical courses were inducted. Later, UG level Medcial Courses were introduced in the academic curriculum. The institute in the present century turned into Multi Superspeciality hospital with induction of advanced neonatal department, Human Milk Bank, Genomics, Neuro Medicines and School of Digestive and Liver Diseases. In the field of paramedical science, IPGMER offers 12 diploma programmes including Perfusion Technology, Dialysis Technique, Operation Theatre Technology, Medical Lab Technology, Radiography, Critical Care Technology, and others. The undergraduate courses at IPGMER include MBBS, BPT, and B.Sc Nursing (H). 

On the other hand, the postgraduate courses at IPGMER Kolkata consist of MD/MS, PGD, and M.Sc Nursing. The MD and MS programmes offered by IPGMER and SSKM Hospital cover a wide range of disciplines including Radiodiagnosis, Pathology, Anaesthesia, General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, and more.

Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER): Admission Process and Important Dates

  • IPGMER Kolkata course admission is entrance-based. 
  • Candidates are required to take NEET UG, apply for counselling and book their seat for IPGMER MBBS admission. 
  • Similarly, for PG courses, NEET PG scores are required.
  • The superspecialty courses (M.Ch and DM) admission to IPGMER required NEET SS scores.
  • Admission to the MBBS program will be done through the NEET-UG followed by counselling. 
  • IPGMER offers limited seats i.e., 150 seats for admissions into their MBBS program every year. 
  • Admissions to the BPT and B.Sc.(Nursing) programs are done on the basis of merit in JENPAS UG. 
  • IPGMER offers admission to the M.Sc (Nursing) course based on merit in WBPGNAT.
  • Admissions to the Paramedical courses are done on the basis of merit as determined by a centralized competitive test conducted by WBUHS. 
  • Admissions to the MD/MS programs are done through the NEET PG conducted by the National Board of Education (NBE).
  • Admissions to the super speciality courses at IPGMER are made through a NEET SS admission test conducted by NBE.

1. How to apply for admission to MBBS ?

  • Visit the official website.
  • Scroll down the Home page and click on the notification.
  • Register as the “New-User” and Sign-Up.
  • Fill out the application thoroughly and attach the required documents. 
  • Pay the requisite fee  through net banking or debit/credit card.
  • Submit the application after thoroughly checking the details in the application.
  • Candidates are advised to take the printout of the future reference. 

2. What is the admission process for PGD ?

  • Candidates must apply for NEET PG registration and take the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), conducted by NBEMS.
  • After the results, an all-India merit list of the qualified candidates is prepared and published.
  • Candidates who clear the required cutoff for the NEET PG exam should apply for online counselling.
  • During the choice filling and locking, candidates must choose IPGMER Kolkata as their preference. Then, results are declared and allotment letters are given to candidates.
  • Selected candidates must complete the document verification process and pay the fee to confirm admission.
