Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh : Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is a renowned institution of higher learning located in the city of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. It offers more than 300 courses in traditional and modern branches of education, drawing students from all states in India and from different countries, especially Africa, West Asia, and Southeast Asia. The university is open to all irrespective of caste, creed, religion, or gender. The university has several faculties, including the Faculty of Medicine, which has two colleges: Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Dr. Ziauddin Ahmad Dental College.
Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) was established on October 2, 1962, and consistently ranks among the 10-20 best medical colleges in India. The college aims to be an institution of excellence in teaching and training healthcare professionals capable of providing empathetic, humanistic, and ethical care. The college has a highly qualified faculty, with the majority of the junior faculty having completed the MCI Basic Course in Medical Education Technology, and three FAIMER Fellows. The college provides ample opportunities for continuous professional development for its faculty by providing infrastructure, financial support, and an academic environment conducive to research and publication.
JNMC offers an undergraduate course in medicine, namely MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery). The eligibility criteria for admission to the MBBS course is a minimum of 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in the 10+2 examination. The admission process involves appearing for the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The college also offers postgraduate courses in various specialties, including MD (Doctor of Medicine) and MS (Master of Surgery). The eligibility criteria for admission to these courses vary depending on the specialty, and candidates need to appear for the PG Admission Test conducted by the university.
In addition to the Faculty of Medicine, AMU offers facilities for specialized learning in areas of technical, vocational, and interdisciplinary studies. It has the Zakir Hussain of Engineering and Technology, which offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in engineering and technology. The university also has several faculties, including the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Law, and Faculty of Arts. The university has a rich history, with its roots dating back to 1875 when Sir Syed founded the Madarsatul Uloom in Aligarh and patterned the MAO after Oxford and Cambridge universities.
